Wildfires continue to burn in Los Angeles, causing widespread devastation and claiming lives. Strong winds and dry conditions are fueling the blazes, leading to dangerous weather warnings and prompting evacuations.

Firefighters battled wildfires that ravaged the Los Angeles area, claiming 24 lives and destroying thousands of homes. The blazes, fueled by fierce Santa Ana winds, prompted forecasts of dangerous weather conditions through Wednesday. Authorities warned of potential increases in missing person reports and fatalities as teams with cadaver dogs conducted systematic searches in devastated neighborhoods.

The National Weather Service issued red flag warnings for severe fire conditions, with sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph) and gusts reaching 70 mph (113 kph) in the mountains. Tuesday was predicted to be the most dangerous day. As of Sunday morning, the Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth, and Hurst fires had scorched over 62 square miles (160 square kilometers), an area larger than San Francisco. The Palisades Fire was 11% contained, while the Eaton Fire reached 27% containment. The fires destroyed homes and caused widespread damage. Thousands of residents were evacuated, with over 700 seeking refuge in nine shelters. Authorities urged people to stay away from affected areas due to ongoing dangers such as active fires, broken gas lines, and unstable structures. Officials warned that ash from the fires could contain hazardous materials like lead, arsenic, asbestos, and others. Authorities also reported increasing arrests for looting, with reports of individuals posing as firefighters to gain access to homes. By Sunday morning, Cal Fire reported that minimal growth was expected for the Eaton Fire, with continued smoldering and creeping flames. Most evacuation orders for the area have been lifted.
