A 60-year-old widow says she’s having to cuddle herBrenda Leonard, from Northallerton, North Yorkshire, says she used to pay £70 a month for gas and electricity, but was billed nearly £273 this January.
She managed to negotiate it down to £257.75, but an increase of nearly 140% has still been a huge dent for her. ‘I’ve been cuddling my dogs to keep warm, I’m just terrified of receiving a bill I can’t afford,’ Brenda told‘I have lots of friends but I’d never in a million years ask for money. Some of them have small kids and some have no one to go to.’
Brenda, who is originally from Canada, makes just over £11,000 a year and says she cooks all her week’s food in one go in order to cut back on utilities. It comes after regulator Ofgem announced it is raising the price cap at which energy suppliers can charge people
