The NFL's 100th season begins Thursday. And this year is all about how young—and old—the quarterbacks are.
By Andrew Beaton and Michael Salfino Updated Sept. 4, 2019 10:04 am ET Even Tony Romo, the NFL’s master prognosticator, has trouble predicting the future of this NFL season. But he has a pretty good justification. It speaks to what made last year so thrilling and begins to explain why this year may be even crazier.
And yet no one can say how many of the old-timers will pass their expiration dates this year—or how many of the young guns will misfire. The Packers’ hopes are built around 35-year-old Aaron Rodgers, who has been one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks for years and owns the highest passer rating in NFL history. But the Packers have missed the playoffs for two straight seasons, and they’re betting Rodgers can continue to play at an elite level as he gets even older. Just last year, they signed him to a four-year extension worth $134 million that will keep him in Green Bay until he’s 40.
There aren’t many reliable stars in between. The Seahawks still have Russell Wilson, 30 years old, and that’s also why they’re one of the surest bets to be in the mix. The Colts had Andrew Luck in the thick of his prime at 29 years old—until he suddenly retired right before the start of the season. That uncertainty is especially true for the reigning champions. Brady is 42, an age that sends himinto uncharted territory: a quarterback 42 or older has never started more than 10 games in a season. And while his sixth ring may be strong evidence that he’s a cyborg who can play forever, there are indications that isn’t quite true. He has declined in efficiency for three straight years, with his yards per attempt dropping from 8.2 to 7.6—a middle of the road figure.
