Bay Area sports reporter Alex Espinonza on the double whammy of gutting a roster and doubling ticket prices.

Hal Gordon and the independent A’s supporter group Oakland 68s concocted a plan to host a fan fest at Brooklyn Basin next to the water. They were already going to throw a party, but once the MLB lockout was lifted last week, the Saturday fan fest looked perfectly timed to celebrate the return of A’s baseball. It ended up being a eulogy of sorts for Bassitt’s career in Oakland.

The A’s are asking their fans to heavily invest in the team, and that isn’t going to happen, since Fisher isn’t reciprocating. Fisher simply doesn’t invest into his big-league product at the same level as other owners. Within 24 hours of joining the Braves, Olson inked an eight-year, $168 million contract extension. Without ever seeing him swing at a pitch in a Braves uniform, they committed to him long-term.

Given their current situation, you’d think the A’s would want as many butts in seats as possible, instead of dwindling it down to the dozens of diehards willing to watch no-namers at the decrepit Coliseum. You’d think they would keep the Coliseum accessible to fans, instead of squeezing them out.
