It’s been two years since he was drafted, and Evan Mobley’s importance has never been clearer.
following a 51-win season and the first playoff appearance in five years, the Cavs are banking on internal improvement.
Mobley called his first career playoff series an invaluable learning experience. He felt a different level of physicality. He noticed a distinct difference between regular-season hoops and the playoff crucible. He experienced personal hardship, getting pushed around by New York’s burlier frontline and looking uncomfortable trying to finish over -- or through -- Knicks center Mitchell Robinson. The pressure led to uncharacteristic mental lapses.
In hopes of continuing his rapid development, Mobley is investing in a home gym. He wants to get bigger and stronger, building on the enhanced commitment he made to the weight room near the start of January after getting pushed around by Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton. “Our real upside is going to be the diversification of our offense through Evan,” Altman said. “We need to use him as a hub. We need him to play out of the post. He has to get stronger for that to happen. He has to be more aggressive. We couldn’t be more thrilled with him and his development. But there’s going to be a real evolution from him offensively. He’s going to be an offensive weapon.”
The lack of a reliable perimeter game limited the Cavs’ offense at times and crowded the court, especially with Mobley playing alongside another non-shooting big. It was an offense-defense sacrifice the Cavs were willing to make in the regular season, with those twin towers anchoring the league’s top-ranked defense.
