Justin Williams is used to being outnumbered. On the job, he’s in the minority, surrounded by wild characters – some prefer walking on all fours, others are happiest hanging by their tails and many screech. As a site animation and volunteer experiences co-ordinator at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, he’s accustomed to this environment. Outside of work, the avid sports fan ventures into a different kind of enclosure – one with a similarly zoo-like atmosphere.
“A stadium is its own little microculture. You feel like you have to get extra loud when your team scores. There’s lots of razzing back and forth.” Downton has been involved in the rise of sports vacations. It all started with planning watch parties to bring NHL fan communities together in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto. Sold-out parties quickly evolved into bus trips to other cities. When those too sold out, it was clear fans were game for getting on a plane too.
