A group of Canadians is boycotting Loblaw and its many brands throughout May over concerns about inflation and rising grocery prices.
Some Canadians are boycotting Loblaw and its many brands throughout the month of May.They say the boycott is in protest of Loblaw continuing to increase its prices despite the continued high cost of living for Canadians. Some experts say Loblaw isn’t likely to change its prices. Have some stores in your area seemed a little less busy than usual this month? As of May 1, some Canadians have chosen to boycott — or opt out from shopping at — stores owned by Loblaw Companies Inc.
Protesters say they want Loblaw to slash its prices. The company says it already takes steps to combat rising grocery prices. The idea for a boycott started back in November when Johnson, a mental health worker from Ontario, created a group on the social media website Reddit called “Loblaws is out of control.”
Back in March, Johnson and other moderators in the group encouraged members to begin boycotting Loblaw throughout the month of May. Why Loblaw? The boycott doesn’t just include Loblaw grocery stores, but its many other brands, including Shoppers Drug Mart, No Frills and Atlantic Superstore. Galen Weston is the chairman and former president of Loblaw. "As a business, we are acutely aware of the fact that we have to win our customers' business each and every day,” the company said.
