Justin Roiland may have co-created Rick and Morty, but he is no longer essential to the show. For several reasons, Rick and Morty must continue.
Adult Swim has opted to continue producing Rick and Morty despite firing Justin Roiland, and this is the right decision. Separating art from problematic artists is becoming a more and more common necessity. But unlike other contemporary examples, Rick and Morty is the most appropriately prepared to continue without its controversial co-creator. It remains unclear how Adult Swim will achieve this, but for several reasons, they are certainly right to do so.
Dan Harmon is undoubtedly able to continue Rick and Morty with the same tone and success, providing the recasting is explained neatly - which Harmon is best qualified to achieve. Furthermore, other cast members have become central in Rick and Morty's later seasons. Beth , Summer , and Jerry have each become essential to the continuing Rick and Morty plots, to discard them because Roiland was fired would be a disservice to the actors and to fans.
"Ricktional Mortpoon's Rickmas Mortcation" reveals that this revenge plot has been Rick's motivation all along, meaning that season 7 is primed to be the most important season yet, truly wrestling with the convoluted backstory of Rick Sanchez. Rick and Morty season 7 is teased as a more focused season, in line with the early days of Rick and Morty, losing Roiland isn't enough to warrant dismissing this.
