Here's how NASCAR is paying tribute to Kobe Bryant
William Byron's No. 24 Chevrolet will carry a special purple-and-gold paint job in honor of the lateNASCAR and NBA cultures don’t mingle too often, which may make a stock-car paint job honoring the late Kobe Bryant seem like . . .cars will be painted this weekend in the Los Angeles Lakers’ colors, and both to benefit good causes.
Fontana is about 50 miles east of the Staples Center in Los Angeles — the closest NASCAR will race this year to where Bryant and the Lakers played. Bryant, 41, wore No. 24 for the last 11 years of his 20-year NBA career. Byron, 22, is in his third year in the No. 24 car. Axalta’s headquarters are in Philadelphia. Kobe Bryant, the son of former NBA player Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, was born in Philadelphia. Kobe Bryant moved to the NBA after leading Lower Merion High School in the Philadelphia suburbs to the state basketball title as a senior.
After-School All-Stars will also receive proceeds from the sale of collectable die-cast replicas of the No. 24 car driven in Sunday’s race from Byron, Hendrick Motorsports and Lionel, the die-cast manufacturer. Pay attentionMeanwhile, Blaney, who has had bad luck the first two races of the season, will have a commemorative purple-and-gold paint scheme on his No. 12 Ford at Fontana. His main sponsor will be BodyArmor, a company in which Bryant invested.
