Discovered in March 2020 by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mission, officially called Comet C/2020 F3, and nicknamed comet NEOWISE , will not to be seen again for another 6,800 years. . It dazzled sky-watchers in the northern hemisphere for a few weeks in summer 2020 when much of the world was in lockdown.
NEOWISE has no propulsion system, so its fate is unavoidable. The mission will end on July 31, with the spacecraft due to re-enter in late 2024 or early 2025. However, it also found a lot of main belt asteroids and comets, mainly because they produce a robust infrared signal simply because they get heated slightly by the sun. After a few years of staring into deep space to cool down—so it could better sense those faint heat signals—WISE was renamed NEOWISE and embarked on a decade-long mission dedicated to detecting NEOs.
