We're getting ready for the Xbox Series x/playStation5 console war, but head of Xbox Phil Spencer says that Sony and Nintendo are not Xbox's true competition.

We’re on the verge of a fresh console war, with Microsoft and Sony both readying shiny new systems designed to usher in a brand-new era of high-powered gaming, just like they did with the generational leaps that have come before. But even so, Microsoft appears to be looking past that, both with decisions its making with Xbox Series X as well as Game Pass and Xcloud.

So what Spencer is talking about here pretty specifically relates to cloud streaming, which Microsoft—as well as Google and Amazon—sees as becoming a dominant force in the gaming industry sometime in the near future. Microsoft’s Xcloud platform is still in the testing phases, but it’s already promising on a technical level. And when it arrives as a commercial product, it will do so with the Game Pass subscription service that remains as close as we’ve gotten to the fabled “Netflix of games”.

But that will be then and this is now: I don’t predict that gaming will come to be defined by cloud streaming in the next two years or so, and even when the new tech finds its audience it it will do so in the broader context of consoles, PC and mobile: local computing is bound to be a part of this equation for a good long while.
