Former Biden labour secretary Marty Walsh says running the NHLPA is ‘more like being the mayor’

Less than halfway through the President’s term, Walsh was in a comfortable spot in the cabinet as labour secretary. Then he got a call about an interesting opportunity: running the NHL Players’ Association.

With the current collective agreement in place through the 2025-26 season, the most pressing issue concerns the Coyotes, set to go into a second season in a 5,000-seat rink on Arizona State’s campus after a referendum for a new arena in Tempe failed. When Walsh speaks to players, he finds out what they think is good or not so good for the game. Many, such as Connor McDavid, prioritize returning to the Olympics after a lengthy absence and getting a World Cup of Hockey on the schedule, while others are more concerned with the cap going up and keeping escrow payments down.

Walsh, 56, also has gotten to know commissioner Gary Bettman since taking over in March. They attended an event together at the Canadian Embassy in Washington in April and have met several times to discuss the cap, the Coyotes and more. Kevin Shattenkirk, a veteran defenceman who was on the search committee, said Walsh was engaging and commanding right away and gave out his cellphone number to players to call any time after his first interview.
