Houston Rockets guard TyTy Washington Jr. drives the ball up court in the first half of game action against the Miami Heat at the Toyota Center on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022 in Houston.Rockets coaches had arrived in Barclays Center a few minutes earlier, when in the window before players would warm up to face the Nets, they gathered in a side locker room for an important, or at least entertaining function.

The interest in the game, however, was at least partially driven by the decision to have rookie TyTy Washington Jr., the Rockets’ late-first round selection in the 2022 draft, finish the G League season with the Vipers. With Washington, that begins with the organization’s decision to have him play in the G League, even though there could have been some playing time available with the Rockets.

There could have been some playing time with the Rockets, but not the role he has had with the Vipers. Washington has been more confident and aggressive while in the G League, averaging 26.6 points and 7.6 assists, making 40.7 percent of his shots in eight regular season games, though he misfired on 3s as he has with the Rockets. Washington had 30 points and eight assists in Wednesday’s win.
