Joker changes a lot of its DC Comics source material, and director Todd Phillips has given a definitive reason as to why it's set in the year 1981.

Todd Phillips's Joker is one of the most successful standalone comic book movies, but it drastically changes its source material, re-setting the story in the year 1981. The 2019 movie follows Arthur Fleck , a clown-for-hire with dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian. However, being impoverished and having to take care of his mother, who is mentally ill, keeps that dream from becoming a reality.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The movie takes place in a dirty, New York City-influenced Gotham, but it's also a period piece. Joker clearly takes place in 1981, as the Wayne family passes posters for the movies Blow Out, Zorro the Gay Blade, and Excalibur, all of which were released that year. It isn't clear to audiences why the film is set in 1981, as the period isn't particularly tied to the narrative, and the story could have been told in the modern day.

The director explained, "When I pitched to Warner Bros. and handed the script in, to sort of make it clear, this isn't f****** with anything you have going on. This is like a separate universe" . While it's unlikely to ever happen, Joker could still be tied to the DCU, as the age of Bruce Wayne in the 2019 movie would be a similar to Ben Affleck's Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

The Year Is Also An Homage To One Of Joker's Biggest Influences It has been well-documented that Todd Phillips's Joker was heavily influenced by decades-old Martin Scorsese crime movies set in New York City. Taxi Driver was a big inspiration, and though that was released in 1976, The King of Comedy was released in 1982, which is extremely close to Joker's time period.
