NBA legend Charles Barkley is donating $1 million for ALS research at Alabama, Jackson State and Bethune-Cookman universities.

"I’m just so lucky and blessed beyond anything I can imagine," Barkley told AL.com.

Barkley is a long-time friend of Deion Sanders, the former Jackson State football coach who recently agreed to coach Colorado. After Auburn fired football coach Bryan Harsin on Oct. 31, Barkley lobbied for Sanders to get the job. Sanders made history at Jackson State in 2022, going 12-0 and winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference title against Southern, 43-24 on Dec. 3, at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium."They’re probably gonna take a little hit with him leaving," Barkley said,"so I want to show them some love because, man, what accomplished there was pretty extraordinary.

According to the AL.com story, Barkley has previously given millions to other HBCUs, including Alabama A&M and Clark Atlanta in 2016; Morehouse in 2017; Miles and Tuskegee in 2020; and Spelman earlier in 2022.
