The Rockets’ interests are similarly on hold. They always were. Durant making peace with beginning his four-year, $198 million with the Nets does not change that. But Durant sticking around in Brooklyn is not good for the team that holds a pile of Nets picks. The immediate impact is unlikely to have been altered. The Rockets’ control of the Nets’ 2023 pick is a pick swap. Even if Durant had been dealt, a team with Kyrie Irving — assuming the Nets kept him after a Durant deal — Ben Simmons, Joe Harris, Nic Claxton and whatever came back from the Durant deal was likely to have a better season than the still-rebuilding Rockets.
Had Durant left and the Nets slipped even just from contender status, Irving could have sought his escape next summer as a free agent, difficult as it is to predict Irving’s thinking. In that scenario, the Nets could have then opted to keep the picks they would have gained in the Durant deal and moved to a rebuild, a course change that the Rockets would have heartily endorsed.
