Why one Vogue editor struggled to let go of their braids in quarantine.

Still, that Groundhog Day regularity only holds true until a certain point. About three or four weeks into quarantine, my braids were well past their best-by date. Though I had knotless box braids, a technique that’s kinder on the scalp than the traditional method, my hair had grown out by at least an inch and was tangling precariously at the roots.

That sentiment was echoed on a group chat with a few girlfriends in New York. “We don’t have a shortcut when it comes to doing our hair; it’s going to take time, and that’s how it is,” read one text message. Another popped up almost instantly: “I was fired up to do it the other night. Like, let me take my braids out! I can do this! Then I just lost steam. It’s like fuck it, we’re in a pandemic.”

What he said struck a chord. The reason I’d gotten braids was a major pain point to begin with. After a particularly agonizing breakup at the beginning of the year, I’d felt the urge for radical change. Because I was just too chicken to get a buzz cut, braids felt like a good alternative. They offered the chance to cosplay at being someone else without the commitment. Now this new alter ego—confident, carefree, and with hair down to—was beginning to grow on me, quite literally.
