To get through the tough moments, I pulled out a pearl of wisdom from the girls’ preschool days that still serves us well: “In our family, this is how we do it.” I’m stubborn, which helped, but I also wanted my kids to learn that no means no. After a while, the confrontations diminished, along with that nagging feeling of deprivation. It was working.I also tried to give the kids broader context about our new policy.
And now when we pass the ever-present ice cream truck after school, it’s no longer a battleground. However, rules are meant to be broken. I'm sure we'll hit up that truck one warm, perfect weekday—and it will feel like a special celebration. Let’s just hope I have some cash.
