It was beautiful, the ideal accompaniment to calf-length boots and it had pockets. Perfect! But as I left the shop, bag in hand, I felt a bit sick.
With a new year looming, I made a decision: if I wanted something new in 2022, I’d have to make it myself. Certainly,doesn’t have the same impact as fast fashion, but in the constant search for newness, I was failing to enjoy and appreciate what I already had, and buying pieces that only paid a fleeting visit to my wardrobe before I realised they didn’t work for my personal style, or my lifestyle.
However, I quickly realised the point wasn’t to race to make as many garments as possible. I wanted to slow down, reconnect with my clothes and enjoy the process of making as much as the final product. Equally, I didn’t want to replace buying clothes with buying metres and metres of brand-new fabrics, the provenance of which I knew nothing about – a practice that isn’t exactly sustainable, either. I was going to take it slow and use as much of what I already had as possible.
