Natural gas prices have shot up worldwide and huge price hikes are enraging some Enbridge customers. Gas usage estimates that don’t match reality are only making matters worse.

Edmond Marc du Rogoff couldn’t believe the “horrendous” price increase on his October natural gas bill. He wasted no time asking Enbridge to explain.

“I can pay it, but it’s a strain for any budget when you have a basic utility more than doubling,” said du Rogoff, who lives on a fixed income. “But I know it’s not just me, everyone is going through it.” to read household metres every two months, as it is required to do, and that it is working to resolve the issue.

Every quarter the gas rates are adjusted because natural gas is a commodity that is bought and sold on North American energy markets, meaning its price fluctuates based on factors like seasonal changes and major weather events, said Nancy Marconi, registrar for the Ontario Energy Board. The Ontario Energy Board would not say how many times it has refused utility companies’ rate proposals, but said the board reviews the applications to ensure calculations are accurate and “in accordance with long-standing practices.”

Energy prices globally will likely remain volatile in the first quarter of 2023, said Andrew Botterill, partner and national lead of oil and gas with Deloitte. Canada exports around half of the natural gas it produces.
