OpEd: 'To see the world depicted in The Handmaid’s Tale as a worst-case future is to ignore how the United States has controlled the reproductive rights of Native, Black, Latinx, incarcerated, disabled, and poor people.'

The ubiquity ofreferences and imagery in conversations centered on reproductive justice suggests that many are trying to make sense of our surreal present moment — but it also unearths a fatal flaw in the mainstream understanding of the fight for abortion rights and bodily autonomy as a whole: We are not “bound for Gilead”; we are already living in a world where marginalized individuals have faced many of the horrors described in Atwood’s book.
