Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron has explained why the sequel didn't introduce the X-Men or Mutantkind to the MCU. The Loki writer helped develop the story of the sequel to 2016's Doctor Strange alongside director Sam Raimi. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen reprise their roles of Stephen Strange and Wanda Maximoff.
After narrowly escaping Wanda's siege on Kamar-Taj, Strange and America Chavez stumble into an alternate universe. Stephen is brought before this universe's Illuminati, including Professor Charles Xavier, with the mutant leader once more being played by Patrick Stewart.
"Yeah, we talked about House of M, and there’s plenty of examples of Wanda doing bad things throughout the comics in an effort to get her kids back. But ultimately this story didn’t need mutants to be powerful, I guess was our feeling. And, you know, wherever that lies on the timeline for the MCU, it didn’t feel like this was the right place to introduce it -- because then it suddenly would have just been about mutants.
Despite their omission, Olsen hopes to interact with the X-Men when they are eventually introduced into the MCU at a later point as revealed in a recent interview. While Olsen has revealed that she is unsure of what the future holds for Wanda Maximoff after her ambiguous fate in the Multiverse of Madness ending, she would like to be part of the X-Men's introduction to the MCU when the time comes.
With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness taking fans by surprise by making longtime Avenger Wanda Maximoff the film's antagonist, it is understandable why Waldron may have wanted to limit the film's references to the X-Men.
