'Creed III' brought SFGATE columnist and retired pro basketball player Rod Benson to tears.
The day I officially retired from professional basketball was magical. I finished my pregame warmups while the South Korean fans waved lights back and forth. Music blared as drones flew overhead. My entire career came into focus, and I truly appreciated it for the first time. I shed a few tears and proceeded to play my last game, content with what had been.
What I rarely talk about is the day I actually retired from the sport. I was a little over my playing weight and was losing in a 3-on-3 masters tournament in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The games started at 1 a.m. because it was so hot outside, so I sat there in the middle of the night drenched in sweat, having just lost to a team full of what I considered nobodies. If I had a, I would never have lost to these clowns. But I knew I would never train that hard again.
What I never talk about is the day I finally retired from basketball, for real. I was in fantastic shape, probably good enough to get back on the court, but I hadn’t touched a ball in months, if not years. I was standing in the center of my loft, head in my hands, crying. When I sat down to watch “Creed III,” and it was mentioned that retirement was looming for Adonis, the character played by Michael B. Jordan, I wondered how he would handle it.
The idea that he has no choice but to fight is an important one. Adonis' daughter gets into a fight at school, and he shrugs it off, saying that sometimes things can be resolved only by a “punch to the face.” Later, after Adonis and Damian have an initial scrap, each one acknowledges that it wasn't about the other person. Adonis keeps finding reasons to fight while actively avoiding the reasons that led him to fight in the first place.
