Some families in Massachusetts just saw their child care costs shoot up by 150% almost overnight.
A federal appeals court ruled that au pairs -- live-in child care providers visiting from abroad -- with families based in the state must be classified as domestic workers and given certain rights and protections, including being paid minimum wage. The au pair program, designed as a federal cultural exchange program under the US State Department, brings au pairs to the United States on a temporary J-1 exchange visa.
But some au pairs claimed their host families took advantage of them being under the same roof, and ignored the cap on working hours. Abril Nieves arrived from Mexico in 2014 to be an au pair for a family in Boston. Former au pair Abril Nieves, who was disapointed about her time in the au pair program, is happy about the changes increasing au pair pay."What [the agency] sold me was a cultural exchange," she said."They said you'll work a couple hours, learn English, travel.
