Just ask Druh Farrell, who was supposed to be enjoying retirement right now. Instead, she’s power walking down a street of colourful houses opposite a park in northwest Calgary, a handful of staff and volunteers struggling to keep pace. Suddenly she’s interrupted by staff calling her name. She’s walked right past a little pink house that, according to the data that staff and volunteers have been collecting for almost a year, hasn’t been contacted yet. “Oh, sorry,” she says, with a laugh. “I walk fast.”
Because while the oilsands are mined to the north, pumpjacks scattered across the province, the business dealings are done here, giving the city a pragmatic heart for business that tends to favour things like lower taxes and fewer regulations. In some ways the riding she has taken on represents the city itself. Calgary-Bow, is a mostly residential neighbourhood in the city’s northwest, one you’d drive by if you were heading to the Rockies.
