Why is To Kill a Mockingbird's Boo not a hero?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT At the end of To Kill a Mockingbird, Boo Radley is protected by the sheriff, but he isn’t praised as a local hero. A staple of middle school and high school libraries, Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is widely considered to be a quintessential work of American literature.
When Sheriff Tate discovers Bob’s body with a knife wound, Atticus thinks Jem killed him, because he’s fiercely protective of his sister and may have resorted to drastic measures after his arm was broken. Tate is sure that it was Boo, but in order to protect Boo’s privacy, he tells Atticus that he will report that Bob fell on his own knife. If Tate reported that Boo had killed Bob, then he’d have to go on trial and go through all the scrutiny and attention that would come along with it.
Why Bob Ewell Tried To Kill The Children Even Though Tom Was Found Guilty At Tom’s trial, Atticus manages to establish that his accuser, Mayella Ewell, and her father, Bob, are lying. But the jury still convicts Tom anyway. Despite getting exactly what he wanted, Bob still attacks Atticus’ kids on their way home from the Halloween pageant. This is because Bob felt that Atticus had embarrassed him in front of the whole town.
