Farhan Zaidi and the Giants need somebody with Melvin's easy authority, directness and rapport with everybody in baseball.
SAN FRANCISCO — Two managers held pregame media sessions at Oracle Park on Wednesday, about 15 minutes and 250 feet apart, and one of them definitely seemed like the perfect fit to lead theBut there was a slight complication to this conclusion: I’m referring to Bob Melvin, who currently manages the
I’m not saying that Kapler is a bad manager. I think for a different kind of team in a different kind of season — the 2021 Giants come to mind — his unique blend of swagger, tense energy, analytical thinking and occasionally awkward earnestness is very valuable. Also, he’s proven he can work smoothly with Farhan Zaidi and in the Giants’ clubhouse. This franchise could do a lot worse than Kapler.
I’m saying this because when they’re together, Zaidi and Kapler seem like they’re trying to prove things more than they’re just trying to do things. And I think a stronger, more experienced manager could temper some of Zaidi’s more esoteric leanings, the way Melvin and Beane came to many practical compromises together.
Melvin, who managed the A’s to three AL West titles during his decade in Oakland, led the Padres to the NLCS a year ago. Really, if the main reason you’re keeping your GM and manager is because they both happen to be signed for next season, that’s the wrong main reason.
