A cinematographer for AvatarTheWayOfWater says the BTS process made him feel duped at first. 'I imagined I would start to analyze all this footage that had been shot, and the really weird thing was that there just wasn’t that much for me to look at.'

Avatar: The Way of Water's cinematographer describes the surreal feeling of joining the James Cameron project. The sequel to 2009's Avatar, which is the highest-grossing film of all time, The Way of Water finally debuted this month. A strong follow-up to its predecessor, the sequel film has already passed the $1 billion mark at the box office and earned largely positive reviews, with praise centering the movie's action sequences, use of 3D technology, and stunning visuals.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY During a cinematographers' roundtable facilitated by THR, cinematographer Russell Carpenter spoke about his experience coming onboard the Avatar sequel, explaining that, since he wasn't on the project from the start, he was tasked with forming the elements that had been filmed into a cohesive - and human - vision.

"Everybody here was in on the project from the very beginning, but I inherited years and years of research and work that had been done in computers, worlds that have been developed. The movie is kind of made in layers. After the script’s done, environments are created that represent Pandora, the natural world, and another environment that represents this dominant, militaristic world. And my job is to bring all the human elements into what has gone before and do it in a seamless way.

In addition to being over three hours, Avatar: The Way of Water does not complete the franchise, with a staggering four sequels planned since the original 2009 movie. Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5 are set to release between 2024 and 2028, creating a unique challenge for the filmmakers due to the many young cast members.

With such an ambitious and staggering project as Avatar: The Way of Water and its complex way of being filmed and edited, it makes sense that the creators had to approach things from a fragmented perspective. Though filming piecemeal can sometimes risk a sense of tonal inconsistency and disorganization in a movie, the reviews for the Avatar sequel indicate that Cameron's strong vision carried the creative team through the process of producing a cohesive film.
