Whoever leaked the clip may have saved the team from its own short-sighted approach, writes Marc Delucchi.
“To be 100% honest, I thought it was bulls—t,” Draymond Green said during his
on Saturday. “No other videos leak from practice. When we’re working on our sets they don’t leak. When I’m coaching everyone up that doesn’t leak. So I thought it was bulls—t that the video leaked.”."I've been in this league for 30-plus years, I've seen all kinds of crazy stuff. When things are kept internally, it's really, almost easy, to handle them. It's just so much cleaner and smoother, and you can move forward.
. “But on Friday morning, many watched the video and saw what happened for the first time, along with the rest of us. Multiple sources said their view of the situation is altered. Seeing Green walking up on Poole with bad intentions. Seeing him respond to a baited shove from Poole with a ready swing. Seeing how much venom was behind the punch. That wasn’t the Green they knew.”
Poole and a few others didn’t need the video to know what happened, but everyone else did. It’s easy to imagine, then, a counterfactual where the video never gets out, and the locker room splinters over a misunderstanding of what actually happened. It’s in Green’s self-interest to be angry at the leak. He’s probably headed to free agency in some form next summer, and it’s not like he had the squeakiest reputation to begin with. But would Kerr really want veterans ostracizing Poole based on a possibly incorrect perception of the incident? Maybe that wouldn't have happened, as the wagons were already circling around Poole before the video leaked.
