Rishi Sunak, the former chancellor, and Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, are the final two in the race to be Britain’s next prime minister. Conservative Party members will get the final say in September
through the covid-induced economic crisis. But his response to covid-19 is also the cause of much of the opposition he faces in the party: the tax take is due to rise to its highest level in decades, in part due to increased payroll taxes Mr Sunak pushed to support the National Health Service. Mr Sunak is a Thatcherite, but he has distinguished himself from his rivals by ruling out tax cuts until inflation is under control.
Mr Sunak supported Brexit, and has promised a big drive to revise EU-derived regulation. But some on the right of the party accuse him of being soft on Brussels. And because his resignation as chancellor on July 5th helped to trigger Mr Johnson’s downfall, many Conservative MPs question his loyalty.
