Hydro Ottawa says both non\u002Dunion employees and contractors have been supporting restoration efforts.

Hydro Ottawa said in an email to this newspaper that its contingency plan was in its sixth week, with both non-union employees and contractors supporting restoration efforts, including Thursday night, when severe storms caused power outages to around 7,555 customers in Riverside South, Richmond South and Findlay Creek, including a tornado that touched down in the Ottawa’s south end.

IBEW Local 636 members have been on strike since June 28. In a virtual vote the night before, 74 per cent of the union members who participated voted to reject a four-year contract offer. Membership had voted down a previous contract offer, by 81 per cent, on May 31.Article content Mike Hall, a representative for the union, said Friday that members’ spirits remained high as talks between the union and the electricity distribution company continued, though he noted that having contractors take over IBEW work during the strike negatively affected negotiations.

IBEW Local 636 has called out what it called “scab” companies on its page on X for crossing the picket line during the strike, highlighting XOH Powerline, Batte Pole Line Ltd., KPC Power Electrical Ltd. and Aerial Work Utilities.Article content
