With the dark clouds of a one-win record circling the Vancouver Whitecaps, there have been a few beams of sunshine breaching the darkness.
The one win was against the top team in Major League Soccer, Los Angeles FC, as the Caps held an offence on a record-setting pace to zero goals.
“It takes a little bit of tranquillity,” said the Whitecaps’ coach. “When it’s 0-0, and games are very tight, it gets anxious. If the opponent scores, or if we score now we want to defend, it’s going to take a little bit of tranquillity … and maturity in dealing with that.” The Union play either in a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 setup, relying on an active and aggressive press to force turnovers. They lead the league in tackles per game and concede the fewest shots . But the Caps will look to recapture the quality they showed against LAFC and the Seattle Sounders.
“The key has been our defensive shape, the way everyone is buying into our tactics,” said Union winger Alejandro Bedoya. “We’re not allowing many chances from our opponents, which is key. But at the same time, we’re trying to make the most of our chances. We got another three goals against Montreal even though we didn’t play so great. But the most important thing for us is defensively — allowing these easy goals where we were spaced out too much and not really tactically in our spots.
