It\u0027s been six long seasons since the Whitecaps last played a Concacaf game, but they get the chance Wednesday when they host Real Espana.
“It should also remind us that that was a long path to get there and that we have worked hard for it,” said sporting director Axel Schuster. “So now, go into this game with the right mindset and taking this as a very big chance for the club to show ourselves on another stage … That’s what makes it so special.”
The team’s difficult winning on the road away from B.C. Place has been well-documented. But being on the road in MLS is one thing; travelling to a Concacaf country is another kettle of fish entirely. In fact, one might even be thrown at you. “It’s critical to do our best tomorrow. It’s gonna be a six-hour flight to Honduras, the weather is going to be completely different, it’s more than 30 degrees now. So and we know how Central American team are stronger when they’re home and when they’re able to put the game on the ground that they like.
That’s not to say they’re short on experience in games against Central and South America. Forward Cristian Dájome won the Copa Sudamericana in 2018-19 with Independiente Del Valle and the Copa Libertadores with Atlético Nacional in 2015-16. Déiber Caicedo , Sergio Córdova , Andrés Cubas , Mathías Laborda , Luís Martins and Pedro Vite have all also tasted it before.
