The Leafs have to weigh the likelihood of the player taking them to arbitration and winning his case. The teams and players can continue to negotiate, but if Kaše wins a case for less than $4,538,958, the Leafs would be locked into the salary. Anything over, and the Leafs could walk away, making him a free agent. For a team with only a tad over $10 million in cap space, and still looking for a goalie, or two, the risk of losing an arbitration case could be too costly for the Leafs to take.
