This stultifying adaptation is the disappointment of the year for fans of Delia Owens' bestselling novel
problem here, though, in that it is increasingly difficult to believe that the town would so vehemently reject a woman who is beautiful, white and painfully well-mannered. It might have done the film good to dig deeper into Kya’s wildness, to see her with more dirt on her face.
The book distracted from the unlikelihood of Kya’s situation with its descriptive prose, an atmosphere thick with buzzing cicadas and swamp trees like giants. But the film can’t luxuriate in its scenery in the same way, because it has two hours, not 400 pages, and has to get through the plot. And so we meet Tate , Kya’s first love, who teaches her to read in about five seconds, then ghosts her when he leaves for college.
