from royal life was bound to be awkward. But at some point, you just need to get it over with. And that point was today, when he hosted the Rugby League World Cup 2021 draw at Buckingham Palace.
The suit-clad duke smiled for the cameras. He chatted with players and executives from the sports league. He joked around with children, and gamely participated in the draw itself, drawing team names out of a glass bowl. He even gave a short speech about mental health. You know, run of the mill royal stuff.
It’s not known when, exactly, Prince Harry’s next public appearance will be. While he obviously intends to continue advocating for his signature causes , the uncertainty made this occasion all the more poignant. Prince Harry has a great sense of humor, and today it was on full display. After watching a group of school kids play rugby on the Buckingham Palace lawn,When they all gathered for a picture, he also “Some of you are really warm…some of you haven't been running around.”
There’s been a lot of discourse and drama surrounding his departure as a senior royal, and much that has yet to be sorted out. But as his retreat into private life seems inevitable, moments like this show that the royal family will miss a certain spark without Prince Harry, the resident goofball (“you’re pregnant? Is it mine?”
