The British prime minister’s legacy will be inextricably linked to Brexit, along with a slew of scandals that ultimately led to his own downfall. “In politics,” he acknowledged Thursday, “no one is remotely indispensable.”
“I want to say to the millions of people who voted for us in 2019, many of them voting Conservative for the first time: Thank you for that incredible mandate. The biggest Conservative majority since 1987, the biggest share of the vote since 1979,”outside Downing Street, becoming the third consecutive Conservative prime minister to resign.
During his short speech, Johnson didn’t focus on failure. Instead, he emphasized what he views as the successes of his tenure: the vaccine rollout; leadership on Ukraine; “getting Brexit done.”personality that drove Johnson’s ascendance —and downfall. Following instinct over convention and prizing storytelling over precision, his charisma and vision for Brexit sliced ideological lines and, scooping up swathes of longtime Labour voters, led the Conservative Party to decisive electoral victory.
The events that catalyzed Johnson’s resignation were swift. But they followed months of turmoil and poorly handled scandals that framed the government as—at best—chaotic, and—at worst—dishonest.
