Darth Vader’s tyrannical rule left generational scars on almost everyone in the Star Wars galaxy, but his children ultimately suffered for his crimes.
The majority of people in the galaxy had no idea Anakin Skywalker had turned into Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy. Instead, many believed Hayden Christensen’s Anakin died during Order 66 and the Purge of the Jedi Temple. Those who believed this lie thought of Anakin as one of the countless other fallen heroes of the Clone Wars.
On the other hand, Leia had a difficult time believing Vader could be related to her, especially considering she’d been tortured by him in A New Hope. So while her husband, Han Solo, was privy to her secret parentage, her reason for keeping the truth from the rest of the galaxy was less so for Anakin’s sake than her own. Long before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Leia used her life’s work as a leader of the Rebellion to run for the position of First Senator of the New Republic.
