When her kids asked for an allowance, one mom created her very own system to teach them about earning and managing money. Shaketha Marion McGregor of Dublin, Georgia set up a “job fair” in her home, offering her children a variety of available “positions” in which they could earn spending money. McGregor shared the details in a Facebook post, which has gained considerable attention from the parenting community.
“So, my children continue to ask for a new cell phone, an allowance, and to go places,” McGregor wrote in her post. “Yesterday I told them that I’ve heard their requests and that I’ll have a surprise for them today when they get home from school. SURPRISE!!! It’s a whole hiring event! 😂 If you want it, work for it, earn it! And yes, I also have an in-home credit union lol.
McGregor’s post has over 127,000 shares and a slew of praise from fellow parents. “Brilliant! Not only is she teaching them lessons of the world but she’s making it fun and being involved with her kids,” one user commented. The whole thing is pretty smart, considering that the U.S. education system doesn’t typically provide real-life knowledge about personal finance.
