When Canadians remember the Tokyo 2020 gold medal soccer game in years to come, three names will come to mind.
Fleming was just 15 years old when she made her debut for Canada, and eight years later, helped the team earn its first Olympic gold medal by being deadly from the penalty spot.
Sinclair, who for the longest time was the designated penalty taker for Canada, did the same thing in the semifinal where Fleming went to score the decisive goal in a 1-0 win against the United States.“I usually like knowing where I’m going to go, going into it,” Fleming said, following the semifinal win. “I’m confident of where I want to go and then it’s just about putting in the spot I want to.”
“Obviously their goalkeeper is world class and made some great saves,” Sinclair said. “We practiced PKs every day since camp started, so I think we saw players were confident when they stepped up.” “I think it’s important younger folks can see they can be themselves and they can always have a place, and can be Olympic champions, so I think that’s exciting,” Quinn said following the gold-medal win. “I think for me, I was really proud to get here and of the performances I put out on the pitch.Article content
Much like the rest of the country, Quinn was happy to see Sinclair earn an Olympic gold medal to cap off an incredible career. Unlike Canada in the quarter-final, however, Sweden were unable to overcome the miss, losing out on the gold medal.
