That one guy is kind of sorry
Photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic for Clusterfest Shane Gillis, the unremarkable comedian whose hiring at Saturday Night Live caused backlash after racist and offensive jokes he made last year surfaced, has been fired before he could even begin.
Whatshisname’s racist remarks, which were targeted at Chinese people, occurred during a 2018 episode of his podcast, Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast. After Gillis was called out, he apologized via Notes app, saying, “If you go through my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you’re going to find a lot of bad misses.” Whachamacallhim went on to say that being the best comedian he can be sometimes “requires risks.
The apology wasn’t enough for SNL to retain their new hire, and announced their decision to fire thatoneguy. “We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days,” a spokesperson for the show said in a statement. “The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard.”Clearly, this was no sweat off his back.
