All your debate questions answered, including: ‘Who’s debating which night?’ ‘Where can I stream it?’ and ‘Who’s John Delaney again?’
Photo: Drew Angerer/Getty Images Due to the bounty of candidates vying for the Democratic nomination in 2020, the first round of debates will be split over two nights, featuring 10 candidates on Wednesday evening and 10 more on Thursday. Broadcast from the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on both nights, the debates will be available to stream online for free on NBCNews.com, NBC News’ app, MSNBC.com, and on Telemundo.
On both nights, candidates will have 60 seconds to answer moderators’ questions, with 30 seconds allotted for follow-ups. What Does the Stage Look Like? On night one, Elizabeth Warren and Beto O’Rourke will be in the center of the stage, while night two will have Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders in the middle. But as New York’s Ed Kilgore notes: “The number of questions directed to candidates, which often varies, is more important than where they appear in distant shots of the stage. Proximity can matter, though, if candidates get the opportunity to mix it up.
Among lesser-known contenders, the big hope — and the plan — is a viral moment or shining performance that can set them apart from the pack before the field is further winnowed later this summer. Many are practicing one-liners and attacks that they think might provide that spark. The strategies among the underdogs also might end up varying by night.
