Videos shared on Twitter and the American Meteor Society’s website show the fireball glimmering on the horizon from porches and backyards in Vallejo, San Ramon, Riverside, Morgan Hill and Santa Barbara. Most meteors in the night sky are caused by tiny particles of dirt, stone and metal no bigger than a pea. When slightly larger objects hurtle through the atmosphere, energy is emitted in the form of heat and a bright light, caused by sheer friction and speed, which can be as high as 10 to 50 miles per second. Lunsford said the asteroid that produced the meteor was likely softball- to basketball-sized based on how bright it was.
“I was driving my car when this phenomenon occurred, so I was quite shocked and surprised by what I saw,” read one report on the American Meteor Society’s website from Emily F., an observer in Modesto. “It was very close. It seemed to near the horizon in my view and became brighter as it came down with a blue tail.”
