RayshardBrooks is one of the latest names to be added to the long and continuously growing list of Black people who have been killed by police.
, which analyzed eyewitness and surveillance video, as well as body camera footage, reports police had a cordial interaction with Brooks for 27 minutes, during which time Brooks performs a sobriety test and a breath test for alcohol. Brooks asks if he can walk to his sister’s house, which he says is nearby. “I can just go home,” he says. Around 11:23 p.m., officer Garrett Rolfe tells Brooks he “has had too much drink to be driving” and attempts to place him under arrest.
In video from the incident, Rolfe, Brooks, and another officer on the scene, Devin Brosnan, can be seen scuffling on the ground. Thereports “[Brooks] seizes a Taser from Officer Brosnan, stands up and punches Officer Rolfe. Officer Rolfe fires his Taser gun. The darts hit Mr. Brooks, and Officer Rolfe continues trying to stun him.”
Brooks runs away and is chased by Brosnan and Rolfe. Video shows Brooks turn back toward the officers and point the Taser in their direction before Rolfe fires three shots. Thenotes Brooks was shot less than a minute after Rolfe attempted to place him under arrest.
