A selection of Christmas-themed content to watch over the holiday weekend
the Madrigal family lives in a magical home in Colombia where each member has a unique gift: from shape-shifting and talking to animals to curing ailments with baked goods. Only daughter Mirabel, it seems, hasn’t been offered a gift. But it is Mirabel who notices that their magical casita is falling apart and goes looking for a way to save it.
“I grew up in the ‘70s, so we watched every holiday special that came on, every year. As someone who is now grown-up and has made a few holiday-themed, musical episodes of animated television, I feel indebted to the strange world of those TV specials: the deeply melancholy Charlie Brown specials, the deeply strange Rankin/Bass stop-motion Christmas specials, especially“‘The Grinch’ was unique in that it was the coming together of two towering pillars of entertainment: Chuck Jones and Dr. Seuss .
“You could feel both of them, in a lovely balance, in ‘The Grinch.’ The big eyes on the poor dog and the extended gags with the sleigh were pure Jones. The language and the strangely familiar world were undiluted Seuss.“The specials were definitely flawed. I see now how white everyone looks in Whoville when they come out and sing together. And I see now how exclusively Christian nearly all of the specials were.
