As winter break comes to a close, here’s a sampling of what to do before the kids head back to school this weekend in Toronto.

As part of a yearly winter tradition, Emett dream machines — kinetic sculptures created by eccentric inventor Rowland Emett — are back at the Ontario Science Centre. The museum has been collecting the sculptures since the mid-1970s, shortly after his work was showcased in the 1968 film “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”

Exhibit highlights include a nine-metre-long tea train, a clockwork lullaby machine and the major sweet machine, constructed from, among other things, badminton birdies and doorknobs. Families can assemble their own dream machine prototype at the Rock Paper Science Hall until Jan. 8. The exhibit runs until Jan. 15 and is included in the cost of general admission. Tickets are free for those under three, $13 for children three to 12, $16 for youths 13 to 17, and $22 for adults.
