We counted every pair at the OlympicMarathonTrials and found 94% of finishers wore shoes with carbon-fiber plates.
but has just been released in extremely limited quantities. And Sally Kipyego, like Abdi, took the last spot wearing Next%.Behind the Olympic team members, a slew of runners also wore the Swoosh. The ubiquitous Next% was all over the course, as it has been in marathons for the past year. We counted 148 women and 65 men wearing the Next%, making up 37.7 percent of the 565 finishers. But we were surprised to see that 44 runners are still lacing up the previous iteration, the 4%.
The shoe was widely adopted by runners spread all over the pack, but we saw few pairs at the very front of the race. Only two of the top 10 men and one of the top 10 women wore it. Of course, that makes some sense, as the fastest runners typically have sponsorships and many like Seidel, Des Linden, and Emma Bates wore the fastest shoes their sponsors make. The men, however, decided the Next% was the shoe of choice, as seven of the top 10 wore various colors.
Jacob Riley was unsponsored when he headed to the start line, so he laced up the Alphafly and raced to his second-place finish. It’s almost certain he’ll be fielding calls from shoe companies in the coming days. Still, some other runners took a DIY approach and slapped black paint over a Next%. Yes, it’s as obvious as you might think because, after all, the shoe is still shaped like a Vaporfly and the paint doesn’t entirely conceal what you’re wearing. Eight men blacked out their shoes, including three in the top 11. Only three women disguised theirs, but we found this camouflage by an adidas-sponsored B.A.A. runner to be the least inconspicuous attempt.
