Ottawa's Ron McKinnon, June 14, 2024
There's a pond in Rockcliffe Park that's a bucolic swimming hole. But the lake right next to it is off limits to the public, and only residents who have homes backing on to it can swim in it. How did this come to be?Ottawa's Ron McKinnon, who lives in Overbrook, had never heard of McKay Lake until he trained his Google Maps viewfinder on Rockcliffe Park.
Then McKinnon noticed what he describes as "cottage country" on the lake's western side: docks and wooden staircases leading to people's homes. In the years since, he's seen people swimming in the lake too, he said.
Jennifer Bell was out swimming in the pond one recent morning, as she tries to do up to five times a week during the summer. At the same time, the people who live on and own property on the lake's west side are allowed to be in the lake, said Iola Price, the chair of the environment committee.- Ottawa resident Ron McKinnon
There were court actions and a government-issued stop-work order against the developer, who was accused of improper infilling, Price said. 'If there is one word or perhaps a phrase that describes how the residents feel about McKay Lake, it is a sense of stewardship,' said Iola Price, a retired federal government biologist who chairs the Rockcliffe Park Residents Association's environment committee.
