Head official Larry Smith told NJ Advance Media, who served as the pool reporter for the media, that the officials did not see the play on the field. The replay booth “came in and confirmed aspects of targeting. That’s what was ruled.”“On this play, we saw the defender come in, lower his head, make forceful contact right to the helmet of the runner. It satisfied all the elements of targeting.”
The decision comes a week after Rutgers was on the wrong end of a similar situation during its loss to Wisconsin. Badgers safety Hunter Wohler was flagged for targeting after appearing to make helmet-on-helmet contact with quarterback Gavin Wimsatt while committing a tackle. After a booth review, the call was reversed. Wimsatt eventually returned to the game.
