Like the Harry Potter franchise, 'Lost' and the MCU, 'Stranger Things' is succeeding because it puts character over plot and character interaction over nostalgia.
in its first four days, with 18.2 million viewers having finished the season in its entirety. We can take Netflix's numbers with a grain of salt while still acknowledging that it stands to reason that many people watched the third season of the Duffer Brothers' sci-fi/horror series since its debut on July 4.
Having been one of the people who watched the third season from start to finish, I will argue that it was the best season of the show yet. Yes, the plot was painfully repetitive of what we've seen in the first two years. Moreover, frankly it fell into a trap similar to were it consistently set up the death of major characters only to let them escape or survive at the last minute.for the plot any more than they watch it for the monsters, the action or even the 1980's nostalgia bits.
The first two episodes, despite offering hints of the peril to come, were almost entirely dedicated to watching these crazy kids pal around and get into kid-sized adventures. Whether it was Eleven and Max bonding via a trip to the mall or Will feeling the hurt as his friends drifted away from"childish" interests, the moments of"kids being kids" melodrama were far more potent than the monster peril that followed.
So even as the plot progressed, we got standout beats like Nancy bonding with her mother over institutional sexism in the workplace, Lucas's little sister Erica being bribed into the adventure and turning into the cynical audience surrogate of the"Scoop Troop," and some surprising character development between Steve and breakout newbie Robin .
Not everyone got enough time in the spotlight, as Lucas and Max faded into the background after the first two episodes, and Jonathan was mostly there as a sounding board for Nancy. However, ifwas sold as an eight-hour blockbuster franchise flick, then it shows a keen understanding of why the most recent cinematic franchises that soared highest did so.
